Chao Khun Nor ,Wat Thepsirin

Chao Khun Nor was born on Saturday, 5 February B.E.2440 (A.D.1897).  He was the eldest amongst the 5 children in his family.  Chao Khun Nor was the pioneer students entering Chulalongkorn (King Rama V) University.  Upon completed his studies, Chao Khun Nor become an high ranked officer in the palace and during that time was ruled by the King Rama VI of Thailand.  Chao Khun Nor was a favourite subject and also personal assistant of King Rama VI, and was completely trusted by the king that he was bestow the title of “Chao Phraya”, the highest Thai title of conferred nobleness when he was only 25 years old.

After King Rama VI passed away on that day, Chao Khun Nor’s parents hope that he would married with a lady teacher that his parent has arranged for him.  Chao Khun Nor grief over the death of the King Rama VI at that time, he find no point to remained in the palace.  Finally, Chao Khun Nor told his parents that he decided to enter monkhood.  Before he was ordained, he gives away all his riches and lands to the poor with nothing left behind.  He enters monkhood at Wat Thepsririn at the age 28 years old on 25 November B.E.2468 (A.D.1925), the day before the King Rama VI was cremated.

After Chao Khun Nor ordained, many devotees came from afar to Wat Thepsririn everyday.  Some came to ask for fortune telling, some came to seek for help to solve problems and some came to present offerings to him.  Chao Khun Nor have never accepted any gifts or offerings because Chao Khun Nor observed strictly the 227 precepts in monkhood.  The devotees were not happy that Chao Khun Nor did not accept their offerings or see them.  He wanted to cut the worldly problems or affairs from the outside world and would not want to get involved.  Chao Khun Nor also explained that he ordained as a monk for the purposes for the King Rama VI and to study whole-hearted the teachings of Buddha.  Most important of all, Chao Khun Nor said: he has yet to understand the teachings of the Buddha and required concentration on his self cultivation at that point of time before he can solve their problem.

Ever since Chao Khun Nor has enter monkhood, he meditated from day to night everyday.  Chao Khun Nor was a vegetarian, he eats one vegetable and cereal meal everyday.  From the day that Chao Khun Nor enters monkhood to till his death, he never step out of the temple compound even though during WWII when all the monks are fleeing from Wat Thepsririn.

Chao Kun Nor also has the capability to foresee the future and he can also read anybody mind.  He knew what could happen in the near future but nobody believes him initially, after the incidents happened according to his predictions, many people were surprised.  Amulets already blessed by other great guru monks from other temples were also brought to be blessed by Chao Khun Nor.  Such is the works of the great guru.  It was through the persuasion and begging by many people that Chao Khun Nor finally agreed to conduct the blessing ceremony out of kindness and love for us.  He meditated on the amulets.

Every time Chao Khun Nor consecrate those amulets, there seemed to have some miracles happened such as, when on Saoha (Auspicious) day, 22 March B.E.2512 (A.D.1969), a reporter took a picture during the consecration process of amulets by Chao Khun Nor, the picture turned out showing bright lights emerged from Chao Khun Nor’s brush when he sprinkled water from the brush.  The bright lights emerged from the brush is unlike normal photos shot taken for other monks in the past as mentioned by the reporter from his experience.  This had happened many times during the consecration ceremonies of amulets by Chao Khun Nor.  They believed that this is the meditative power from Chao Khun Nor, his chanting confirmed to be efficacious.

Chao Khun Nor has predicted his actual day of entering nirvana when he was alive.  Couple of days before Chao Khun Nor passed away, he told his close nephew, who took good care of Chao Khun Nor for many years, that he would make an amulet for him.  Chao Khun Nor told his nephew to bring some stone to him to consecrate, but these stone must came from an exact place called “Bang-Bo’ in the province of Samutprakarn.  Chao Khun Nor gave the reason that the name of the place “Bang-Bo” was a good name.  The word “Bo” in Thai mean pond.  Chao Khun Nor meant this “Bo” to be pool of gold and silver.

His nephew asked Chao Khun Nor: “Why must use stone?”

Chao Khun Nor replied his nephew: “These stone were stepped on everyday but never be angry, exactly same like any father and mother in this world will forgive their child, no mater what they do wrong”.

Chao Khun Nor also instructed to put the stone upon a Bodhi leave shape, made from paper, silver, gold or any material and write down the name of the wearer on the Bodhi leave.  The significance of these holy stone are that Chao Khun Nor never offered to consecrate any amulets before in the past, people made amulet and begged Chao Khun Nor to consecrate them.  This was the first time that Chao Khun Nor, himself intended to make amulet for his close nephew.  The stones were also consecrated for the committee members of Wat Thepsririn too.

The last consecration ceremony leads by Chao Khun Nor was held on 25 December B.E.2513 (A.D.1970).

Coming to near end of his life, Chao Khun Nor refuse to seek further medical treatment for his cancer persuaded by many peoples.  Chao Khun Nor choose to cancer, suffer quietly with a smile.  Before Chao Khun Nor passed away, he also left very few pages of written works, which some are wrote in English.

Chao Khun Nor lived a life of excellent austerity and was well known for his meditative powers.  Chao Khun Nor and remained in monkhood till passing away from cancer on 8 January B.E.2514 (A.D.1971) at the age of 73 years old in a beautiful posture with his palms placing together, paying his last respect to the Buddha.  Although Chao Khun Nor has enter nirvana, all the items that he blessed still provide protection and blessing to all being.
